Project / Technique Classes

Needle Felting Embellishments Workshop

-skill1.png
$20
Instructor: Greta Hammelman
Monday 6–8pm
December 18

If you’ve knit any felted piece (mittens or slippers, for instance), add excitement with needle felted embellishments. Greta is new to The Yarnery, and creates wild and wonderful felted creatures and hangings. You’ll see more of those soon! In the meantime, this is a great way to begin.

Byway

-skill3.png
$50
Instructor: Paul Neary
Wednesdays 6–8pm
December 6, 13 / January 3

Another teacher new to The Yarnery, Paul comes to us from a stint as a teacher at Purl SoHo in New York. We’re thrilled to have him! Paul loves Brooklyn Tweed’s Quarry, and chose Jared Flood’s beautiful cabled wrap as his first class. There’s lots to learn, and because it’s knit with bulky weight Quarry, Byway will fly off your needles.

Sammal

-skill3.png
$65
Instructor: Gretchen Funk
Thursdays 6–8pm
January 4, 11, 25 / February 8

Designed by Joji Locatelli, Sammal is a classic textured button-down cardigan. Sammal is worked seamlessly from the top down, with raglan sleeves and tiny braids in the front to add a bit of charm. It also happens to be the perfect sweater for Pop! Sock, The Yarnery’s own American-made superwash merino wool yarn.

Three Hats, Three Techniques

(Hat 1) Quincy

-skill2.png
$35
Instructor: Peggy Mann Rinehart
Saturdays 10am–12pm
January 6, 20

The hat: Quincy, a classic pattern by Jared Flood, reworked in Brooklyn Tweed Quarry. We’ve also knit it in Pop! Jr, for a different but equally appealing texture. The technique: Moebius construction, an unusual and fun twist for a hat.

(Hat 2) ORU

-skill4.png
$50
Instructor: Jamie Bosc
Saturdays 10am–12pm
January 20, 27 / February 3

The hat: ORU, designed by Yarnery favorite Olga Buraya-Kefelian, knit with Woolfolk’s amazing TOV, an indescribably soft and springy OVIS 21 merino wool. The technique: Double brioche! The resulting texture is like nothing you’ve seen before. If you really want to dig in on a more advanced technique, this is the class for you. Learning a more challenging technique on a small and portable project is a recipe for success.

(Hat 3) Sommers

-skill2.png
$50
Instructor: Jamie Bosc
Saturdays 10am–12pm
February 10, 17, 24

The hat: Sommers, a Julie Hoover original, which always means beautiful and wearable, with impeccable details. Five colors of Brooklyn Tweed’s Loft allow you to create a hat that reflects your personality. The technique: Beginning Fair Isle. If you’ve been curious about using multiple colors at once (stranded knitting), this is an easy introduction. Sommers has a minimal amount of colorwork.

Snug, Too

-skill2.png
$65
Instructor: Ted Beverly
Wednesdays 6–8pm
January 17, 24, 31 / February 7

A baby or toddler sweater off the cuteness charts. With a hood! If you’ve not knit a sweater before, this is the perfect way to give it a try. Plenty of time and instruction to complete it. We recommend the plush, washable goodness that is Malabrigo Rios for this knit.

Vejkryds

-skill4.png
$95
Instructor: Peggy Lexau
Wednesdays 6–8pm
January 24 / February 7, 21 / March 7, 21 / April 4

We looked for a project that you could immerse yourself in, and come out the other end with something you’ll treasure forever. We think Vejkryds is that project. It’s a cardigan knit in Woolfolk’s Får, with technique aplenty and style to spare. This class will make you a better knitter, and we’ve built plenty of time into the schedule so that you can finish the sweater by the final session. Don’t miss this chance to immerse yourself in a really lovely project with a very fine teacher.

Invisible Stranding

-skill3.png
$50
Instructor: Susan Rainey
Saturdays 10am–12pm
January 27 / February 3, 10

Invisible Stranding allows you to carry yarn across any number of stitches without catching the floats. Catching floats creates a visible pucker in your knitting and often allows the other color to show through. Invisible Stranding eliminates both of these problems. Susan designed her “It’s Not About the Hat” pattern to showcase this advanced stranding technique. You will learn all Susan’s tips and tricks. Use this technique in Norwegian knitting and many other stranded projects. To quote one knitter, "It will change your life."
