Note: Almost all jute is treated with a mineral oil to keep fibers soft and together as it is twisted. This oil can smell a bit like mild turpentine. If your bundle smells too much for you, leave in the sun for a day or two, exposing the rope to sunlight will lessen the mineral oil smell.
