About Us
The Yarnery has been a Twin Cities staple since 1972, and we're constantly evolving. What started as a weaving-focused vendor stall near Macalester College became a full-service yarn shop in a series of locations in the eighties and nineties — even Rosedale Mall. Many will fondly remember our longtime spot in "the old house" on Grand Ave, home to cozy classes and knit-alongs, trunk shows and visitors (some with wagging tails), and endless nooks and crannies stuffed with favorite yarns. And of course, our gorgeous location on Selby Ave, where we put customers and love of craft front and center with plenty of light and so much color. We loved our time in the Cathedral Hill neighborhood.
Now, we're off on our next adventure, and we've found the perfect long-term home for The Yarnery on St. Clair Ave, in the Mac-Groveland neighborhood of St. Paul, Minnesota. Everything we've always wanted in a store: all the light and color we've come to love, with added space for making, learning, stocking even more gems, shipping near and far, and spending time together. We hope you find it comfortable, inspiring, and stylish, and we hope our Making Space becomes your favorite spot to hang out.
Speaking of spending time together, we continue to be a learning-focused shop. Check out our ever-evolving class schedule. We love innovative techniques, classic patterns, and we're always on the lookout for great new designers. We stock yarn for every budget (seriously, check out Holst Garn), and hard-to-find brands (Scheepjes, CaMaRose). Sustainability is important to us, and we work hard to source as much local and American-made wool as we can (we're big fans of Brooklyn Tweed and Anthology Yarn Co). Our collection of hand-dyed yarn is ever-expanding to fill our new space, as is our focus on needle crafts like embroidery, visible mending, and so on. We're always learning, and we love your feedback.
Accessibility
Our St. Clair Ave shop has one step up from the sidewalk to the front door. There is a zero-step entrance at the rear of the building, and limited parking in back — a great place to park if you have mobility issues. The retail areas, Making Space, and classroom are all one level. The main classroom has a small step up from the the shop area; however, the classroom can also be accessed by its own zero-step exterior door. Let us know if you need access to this entrance for a class and we'll make sure it's open for your use.
Give us a call at 651-222-5793 if you have questions about the layout of our space or concerns about your visit.
